Our industry is based on competitor-based pricing rather than talent, and this marketing strategy, which wedding photographers have adopted, is killing us as creatives, our businesses, and, more importantly, how we are valued as professionals.
Over the years, as a mentor and photographic judge, I have seen thousands of images and met hundreds of photographers, but there are only a few wedding photographers I can recognise through their work. The wedding industry is so homogenized with the same style, the same filters, and the same Instagram feel! Why?
Do we, as individuals, not have our own identity? Our style?
I see fads and trends that dominate the market to the point that nothing WOWs me anymore. Not only this, but photographers don't value their talent or creativity because everyone is copying each other, thinking that this is what couples want, forcing our industry to become led by competitor-based pricing.
This marketing strategy, adopted by wedding photographers, is killing us as creatives, our businesses, and, more importantly, our value as professionals.
As a result, I strive for my mentees to provide photography unique to them. Producing photography, they love themselves. It's not just a moment captured, it's created. It's crafted, and it comes from a place of value.
This means my mentees can price confidently, speaking to clients who appreciate photography and who want something artistic and unique. I encourage my mentees to create experiences so they know their clients are fully invested in their wedding day, not just ticking boxes.
This strategy runs throughout my mentoring programme. I nurture creative talents to help wedding photographers take their photography to an outstanding level and price their worth.
Together, we will change the face of social photography so the public values and respects our talent and costs more. #marketingforweddingphotographers #weddingphotographycourses #weddingphotographymentors
